The short answer
These apps overlap, but they start from different questions. Chordify asks, “Which song do you want to play?” Its strength is getting a player into a synchronized chord view quickly. Guitar Mentor asks, “What do you want to do with this recording?” It treats chord detection as one stage in a broader path that can include separated instruments, generated tab, lyrics, practice tools, a learning plan and an AI music coach.
That means there is no universal winner. The better choice depends on whether catalog breadth or workflow depth removes more friction from your practice.
Where Chordify is stronger
Chordify’s official site describes a catalog of millions of songs, synchronized diagrams and support for guitar, ukulele, piano and mandolin. That is a compelling shape for a player who knows the song title and mainly needs a chord progression that follows the recording.
Its paid features add practical controls such as transpose, tempo change, loop, PDF chord sheets and file upload. The newer Toolkit expands the product toward a tuner, metronome, interactive chord training and live chord detection. Chordify is therefore broader than a bare chord viewer.
There is also an important boundary: Chordify’s own support page says it provides chord charts rather than melody or lead-line tablature. If you specifically want generated lead notes or a tab view from imported audio, that distinction matters.
Where Guitar Mentor is stronger
Guitar Mentor is designed around the full practice loop. A song import can produce timed chords, word-synchronized lyrics, guitar tab and separated audio parts. The six-stem mixer lets a guitarist lower or remove a part, isolate a difficult layer, change tempo, loop a passage and then return to the complete mix.
The app also connects song work to skill work. Chord Lab explains voicings on a fretboard; ear and rhythm drills build supporting skills; daily practice creates a next action; and PlugAI can answer music questions or help construct a focused plan. Those pieces are useful when “show me the chords” is only the beginning of the session.
What neither app can promise
Automatic chord recognition is an estimate, especially on dense mixes, altered tunings, ambiguous bass movement and harmonically complex music. A clean interface does not turn an estimate into an authoritative transcription. In either app, listen critically and correct the chart when the music disagrees.
Likewise, an app cannot inspect hand tension, posture or tone production as fully as a skilled teacher in the room. For pain, persistent technique problems or advanced interpretation, use software as support rather than a substitute for expert feedback.
