Connecting a MIDI keyboard
What keyboards work?
Most digital pianos and keyboards with USB MIDI ("USB to Host") or Bluetooth MIDI (often called BLE MIDI) work, with no driver needed. A MIDI keyboard gives the most accurate results, because the app receives every key press and its exact timing.
Connect with a USB cable
- Connect the keyboard's USB port to your phone or tablet. iPhones and iPads with USB-C can use a USB-C cable or adapter; older iPhones and iPads need Apple's Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. Android phones need a USB-C (OTG) cable or adapter.
- Turn the keyboard on.
- In a lesson, open the input button in the top bar and choose MIDI keyboard. Your keyboard appears in the list; if it does not, tap Refresh MIDI devices.
- Pick your keyboard, then tap Connect input.
You can also choose USB during setup, and see connected keyboards in Profile → Input.
Connect with Bluetooth
- Turn on the keyboard's Bluetooth MIDI and Bluetooth on your phone. Do not pair it in your phone's Bluetooth settings; pair it from the app.
- In a lesson's input sheet, choose MIDI keyboard and tap Pair Bluetooth MIDI. On iPhone and iPad, tap your keyboard in the list that opens. On Android, the app scans for nearby Bluetooth MIDI keyboards and connects them.
- Pick the keyboard from the list and tap Connect input.
On Android 11 and older, Bluetooth scanning also needs the Location permission. Keyboard Mentor does not use your location.
Notes feel late or early
Go to Profile → Input and calibrate for the input you use, playing along with the clicks. Bluetooth keyboards get their own timing setting automatically. Wired USB is usually the most precise.
My keyboard is connected but nothing happens
- Check that the keyboard sends MIDI over USB or Bluetooth (some keyboards have a setting for this) and is not in a demo or local-off mode.
- Unplug and reconnect, or turn Bluetooth off and on, then tap Refresh MIDI devices.
- Close other apps that may be using the keyboard.
Using the microphone
How does Listen mode work?
Listen mode is for an acoustic piano or a keyboard without MIDI. The app listens through your phone's microphone and recognises the note you play, one note at a time. Sound is analysed live on your device and is never recorded or uploaded.
Tips for good results
- Practise in a quiet room, and turn off fans, TV and music.
- Put your phone on the music stand or near the strings, with nothing covering the microphone.
- Play one note at a time, clearly. Unclear notes are ignored rather than guessed.
- Turn the app's own sound down, or use headphones, so the app hears your piano rather than itself.
- Calibrate the microphone in Profile → Input. Microphone timing is less exact than MIDI.
The app cannot hear me
Allow microphone access: on iPhone and iPad, Settings → Keyboard Mentor → Microphone; on Android, Settings → Apps → Keyboard Mentor → Permissions → Microphone. If the app shows an error with an Open Settings button, tap it.
Purchases and subscriptions
Restore purchases
On a new phone, or if Pro is missing, open the Pro screen (for example from Profile, or by tapping a lesson marked PRO) and tap Restore purchases. Use the same Apple ID or Google account you bought with. Signing in to your Keyboard Mentor account (Profile → Account) also helps Pro follow you. A subscription bought on iPhone does not carry over to Android, or the other way round.
Cancel your subscription
Subscriptions are managed by the store you bought from:
- iPhone and iPad: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Keyboard Mentor → Cancel Subscription.
- Android: Play Store → your profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Keyboard Mentor → Cancel subscription.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the period or free trial ends to avoid the next charge. Pro stays active until the end of the period you paid for. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel a subscription.
Refunds
Refunds are handled by Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com) or Google (your Google Play order history), under their policies. We cannot issue store refunds ourselves. See our Terms.
Account and data
- Delete your account: Profile → Account → Delete account, or see Delete account.
- Start over: Profile → Reset progress clears lessons, songs, stars, practice time, streaks and badges on this device.
- Privacy: see our Privacy Policy.
